Imagine you’re outside for a walk, say you’re in a park together with your furry buddy. They’re on a leash and suddenly, without you being aware, something catches their attention which results in them running away from you. It’s such an inconvenience, right? Well, this is where the importance of leash training goes into the picture.

Our loyal companion’s true nature is to explore. Run from here and there. Follow scent trails. Sniff whatever they find, roam in places. Hence, it is unnatural for them to be contained on a leash. The ability of our dog to listen and follow us while they’re on a leash doesn’t come innately. In fact, teaching them to follow cues is actually harder than most dog parents would expect! Our furry buddy being fully trained while on a leash is very important because it will teach them obedience and discipline, especially when you take them somewhere for a walk.

What is Leash Training?

Dogs on a leash walk with their owner

Leash training is not just putting your dog on a leash and forcing them to walk with you. It’s a matter of teaching your dog to follow commands and behave properly while being on a leash. Hence, making them accustomed to the leash around their neck without compromising their comfort and safety is very important.

FAQ #1: Is Leash Training Important?

Answer: Leash Training IS VERY important regardless of your dog’s age and breed. Usually, pups can begin leash training as early as four to six weeks of age. The earlier, the better, according to some animal behaviorists.

This training phase of their life is essential because training is a natural part of their life in the first place. Here are the other reasons why leash training is an important aspect in a dog’s life:

  1. Most places require dogs to be on a leash in public places, especially during walks and other similar activities.
  2. It’s less stressful for owners to take out their dogs if they put them on a leash.
  3. Training provides a good opportunity to create a deeper bond between you and your dog.
  4. A good dog on a leash is a stepping stone for them to facilitate good behavior, especially in public places.
  5. Putting your dog on a leash can help you avoid many unwanted problems outside, especially accidents.

FAQ #2: How to leash train my dog properly?

Leash training is not just putting your dog on a leash and forcing them to walk with you outside. It’s harder than that and it requires plenty of patience… and treats. Here is the proper method to leash train your dog effectively:

  1. Introduce your pup to a collar:

The trick here is to introduce them step by step so that the trust will be built. Start by introducing them to wearing a collar. Give them some time to get used to it. Give them treats as rewards for being a good pup when you put and remove the collar. Once they get used to it, you can now gradually introduce them to wearing an actual leash.

  2. Teach them to obey your cues:

This part of the process is very essential because this is where you will teach them discipline and obedience outside your home. Give them cues that will make them “sit,” “speed up/slow down” their pace, etc. while walking without depending on tugging the leash because it could make them uncomfortable. Give them positive reinforcements like treats and praises when they obey you while practicing.

  3. Make them come to you:

It is quite inevitable that you will let go of your pup while walking outside due to their strong pulling force. Hence, teaching them this command is important. You can do this inside your home first, telling them “come” or any cues/noises that can grab their attention. Be ready with a treat as a reward that you can give when they follow your commands.

  4. Practice both inside and outside:

To maximize the purpose of the leash, it is best to practice all your cues and other safety precautions before actually going out with your dog. If you think that they’re not 100% leash-trained and disciplined, then they need more time to practice.

FAQ #3: What should I do when I encounter problems during leash training?

Leash training your dog isn’t enough to avoid accidents. Since accidents may happen at any given time, it is important for you as a dog owner to know what to do when you encounter such problems. Here are some common “bad dog behavior” and possible solutions to avoid some of the pitfalls:

  1. Increased pulling on your dog’s part to another direction:

It is very likely that your dog will resist your direction especially during the early stages of training. When this happens, DO NOT tug on their neck because this may cause discomfort. Instead, stand still and refuse to move until they eventually return to your pace.

  2. If your dog lunges:

Try to be aware and redirect your dog to another direction so that they’ll get distracted. Try to use treats to catch their attention before your dog gets closer to the target.

  3. If your dog barks too much:

Barking is a part of their nature but some dogs bark too much while walking outside if they’re on a leash. If this happens, make sure to create distance and prepare treats to distract them. Barking too much usually happens when they see another dog. However, this also happens when your pup doesn't get enough physical exercise and mental stimulation.

FAQ #4: What’s the Best Leash Suited for my Pup?

Going out for a walk with your pup is quite a handful...literally. This is why you should consider using a hands-free dog leash instead of a regular leash. It’s quite a hassle to grip the leash especially when your dog has the strength to pull you around. Moreover, you have the advantage of being able to carry around other things when you’re running errands to the grocery store, mall, etc.
